Everyone Deserves To Travel Safely

• Published 2 March 2023

Dream, plan, book, pack, depart, explore, return home safely.

That should be the reality for every traveller. But for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) community, there are still very real risks in visiting some corners of our world.

Considering the safety of a destination is a vital part of planning any trip but when severe penalties are enforced for sexual orientation, risks to personal safety are amplified.

Laws can differ, not only from country to country, but even city to city, and it can be challenging to navigate countries and cultures that do not openly embrace the LGBTQIA+ community.

As a leading global travel insurance and assistance provider, and part of Zurich Insurance Group, Cover-More Group is here to care for and protect all travellers.

We firmly believe how safe a traveller will be, and where they go, should not be governed or restricted by gender identity/expression or sexual orientation. We are committed to fostering inclusivity globally.

That is why we are passionate about supporting Sydney WorldPride 2023, with Cover-More Travel Insurance the event’s Official Travel Insurance Partner.

This year, the world’s eyes will be on Australia, as Sydney hosts the southern hemisphere’s first WorldPride from February 17 to March 5. WorldPride is an event promoting awareness and visibility of LGBTQIA+ issues internationally, and we are proud to be involved in the continued quest for greater diversity and inclusion.

The global LGBTQIA+ community will revel in the spectacular mega-festival. Sydney WorldPride encompasses more than 300 free and ticketed events, including parties, concerts, visual arts, First Nations programming, sport, theatre, dance, music and a centrepiece human rights conference. It is also the 45th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Group CEO Cara Morton leads Cover-More’s dedication to equality and inclusion efforts, and is committed to nurturing a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ people across our workforce, business partners and customer base.

“Caring is at our core, we are a company that champions diversity and we are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of our work family, our business partners and the community,”

Ms Cara Morton, Cover-More Group CEO

“The essence of WorldPride resonates with Cover-More and supporting this incredible event on the global LGBTQIA+ calendar truly fits our ideals to collectively create an impact for the greater good.

“Through our involvement in Sydney WorldPride and beyond, we are helping to shine a light on the importance of safe travel for everyone, and the incredible work being done to address injustices against the LGBTQIA+ community.

“We applaud the vital, meaningful work of organisations such as Rainbow Railroad, which helps LGBTQIA+ people escape state-sponsored violence, and Human Dignity Trust, which defends the human rights of LGBTQIA+ people globally.”

Todd Nelson, Managing Director of Cover-More Travel Insurance in Australia, said it was in Cover-More’s DNA to “champion safe travel for all”.

“While we’ve always been a caring business, for our people, partners and the communities in which we operate; we wanted to increase our impact on fostering diversity and inclusion both within our operations and in the wider community,” Mr Nelson said.

Cover-More’s commitment to safe travel for all will continue long after the parade floats are dismantled, and the last feather boa is packed away.

Through our suite of apps, LGBTQIA+ travellers can receive dedicated destination information, risk alerts and meaningful advice, with assistance always available to those who need it.

“We are an ally and an advocate. And we will continue to support LGBTQIA+ travellers and stand beside those organisations with which we share the same goals for diversity and inclusion, worldwide,” Mr Nelson said.

“Absolutely everyone deserves the right to travel safely and we’re proud to be a trusted companion to all our travellers on every step of their journey.”
